Weight Loss – The Metabolic Syndrome – Effective Treatment With High-Protein Shakes

early diagnosis by doctors is essential to identify those at risk and one of the primary treatments is weight loss. Researchers at the University of Ulm, Germany, found that increased amounts of protein in the diet lead to greater improvement in risk factors of metabolic syndrome compared to the consumption of a standard level proteins.

The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society in Phoenix, enrolled 110 subjects overweight with the metabolic syndrome who were randomly divided into two groups and were followed for one year.

For the first three months, during the weight loss phase, those in the high protein group were instructed to follow a diet that supplied about twice the protein that would be obtained from a typical diet. They also replaced two meals a day with a high content of protein shake meal replacement. The other group was instructed to eat a standard amount of protein from an all-food diet

For the remaining nine months of the study -. The weight maintenance phase – everyone used one meal replacement shake a day as part of their meal plan, and both groups maintained the level of protein intake in the diet they had consumed over the previous three months.

Everyone lost weight after a year, but the high protein group lost more weight (nearly 25 pounds, compared with about 14 pounds for the standard protein group). They also lost more body fat, lean mass and maintained. More importantly, however, is the finding that, at the end of the study, 64 percent of those in the high protein group no longer met the criteria for metabolic syndrome, compared with 41 percent who consumed the standard amount proteins.

Nearly 47 million Americans have metabolic syndrome, and the numbers continue to grow with increasing obesity. Marion Flechtner-Mors, Ph.D., one of the researchers of the study and director of the Research Group on Obesity at the University of Ulm, Germany, said: “Effective interventions, such as the use of high protein meal replacements for weight loss, could improve the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome and affect the lives of millions of people. ”

Weight Loss – Your Daily Protein Requirement


Protein, of course, is essential to life, however, there are some guidelines that determine how much protein consumption is necessary for optimal health and weight loss. Also, if you are trying to lose weight, you should be aware of the amount of protein you consume as this will directly impact your results.

If consumption of an individual protein is low, it will seriously damage their heart and muscles. During the 1970 starvation diet to people fashion suffered health problems because of the lack of enough protein.

In the 1980s the meal replacement weight loss programs became popular which recommended two protein shakes to replace two meals with the third meal be a normal meal, but without much calories. The shakes provided about 50-70 grams of protein for the day, but many people found that they were hungry a few hours of drinking these shakes poor in protein.

The 1990 has a new twist, which included low-carbohydrate diets with high fat and high in protein shakes. These seemed to satisfy hunger, but the appearance of low-carb diets such is not healthy, and in fact, you do not need all that fat to feel full.

Now we have the Rich Jerk in meal replacement protein, which is good because there is enough protein to meet the needs of the organization. It would be logical that a man of 250 pounds will require more protein to feel satisfied than a woman who weighs only 120 pounds. In very general terms the average woman should consume about 100 grams of protein per day while the average man would need 150 grams. This means that for the typical woman, she would need to have 25 to 30 grams for breakfast and lunch in a shake with 25 grams snack in the afternoon. Dinner would include a 6-ounce piece of meat, poultry, fish or soy substitute, which still provide 50 grams of protein. For men, they would need 30 to 40 grams for their breakfast and lunch shake, 20-30 grams for a lunch and a dinner that included 50 to 75 grams of protein.

If you follow this plan and watch your high-calorie, fatty foods-production, you should be able to lose an average of two to three pounds a week without feeling deprived.
