High Protein, Low Carbohydrate Diet – Understanding the Risk


Diet is a very popular method to lose weight. What most people don’t realize, one diet that fits one person may not fit the other, as some might need a very specific one. To those who have diabetes, doing a high protein, low carbohydrate diet is the most suggested diet. Although this type of diet can also do wonders for other people, the risk of doing it is something that they should understand beforehand.

It’s obvious that the high protein, low carb diet does have its benefits compared to other diets. For sure, people who do it can lose weight quicker, as they limit their carb intake. The sugar rush effect that people usually experience from eating certain foods will be absent as the diet helps people control their sugar level better. This is essential for not only people who have diabetes, but also those who don’t have it. Having a controlled level of sugar in the blood will in general make people feel better when eating, because there is none of the roller-coaster effect that your body experience when your blood sugar goes up and down.

Apart from the benefits that a high protein, low carb diet has to offer, there are some risks associated with the diet. Since the diet basically limits the amount of carbohydrate people take, that would also limit the body from getting enough essential nutrients that those foods have. It’d be even worse if people stop taking carbohydrates altogether, as the body does need carbohydrates to be able to function properly. The key here is moderation, as there are actually some good carbohydrates out there contained in most fruits and vegetables. Make sure to consume enough of these good carbohydrates to keep the diet healthy and avoid only carbohydrates found in starchy foods.

As in most things, there are always two sides of the coins and in the case of a high protein low carb diet, there are the benefits side and the risks side. The best advice that can be given to people who want to start a diet is to contact their physician or nutritionist. That way, they can get the complete scoop of both the benefits and risks of the diet. While the diet does enable people to lose weight quicker, once the body adapt to the diet, people often find that after a year or so the diet becomes less effective.

There are always benefits and risks to beginning a diet. The best advice anyone should follow before beginning a diet is to consult your physician or a nutritionist. While it is true that you can lose weight faster on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, you will also find that sticking to this diet for a more than a year will not be beneficial. Once your body is used to the carb restriction, the diet will no longer work as well as it did in the beginning.
